EPA encourages KOTA Territory homeowners to test for radon

During the winter months when our homes are closed up, is the most dangerous time for radon contamination. The naturally occurring radioactive gas seeps from the ground into homes, exposing occupants over time.

According to the EPA, radon exposure is the number one cause of lung cancer for non-smokers.

Terry Brown, Pro Radon Control, says homes in KOTA Territory are susceptible to radon gas.

"The uranium in the ground breaks down and it puts off radon gas and it comes up through the soil, and your house works like a vacuum and sucks in the air that goes out through your vents and chimneys," said Brown.

Brown says the most prevalent areas of radon exposure he has seen are in Rapid Valley and the Black Hills.

There are "at home" radon testing kits available. Or, you can call a professional, like Brown.
