Box Elder man arrested after trying to flee police AGAIN

A man who fled from police officers as they attempted serve an arrest warrant is in custody.
 
John Root Junior, age 24, was arrested Friday afternoon.

Pennington County Sheriff's deputies developed information about Root's vehicle and spotted in South Rapid City.
 
As the officers approached the pair at the intersection of East Tallent Street and Creek Drive, Root tried to run. This time, an officer was able to stop him by using a taser gun.

A second man, 30-year-old Joshua Crites, was also arrested on an existing warrant.
 
Pennington County Sheriff's deputies were serving a warrant at Root's Box Elder home on Wednesday night when Root took off in his vehicle.

Box Elder police officer Nick Rosser tried to stop him but was caught in the car door.

Then as root continued his escape, investigators say he drove directly at deputies and was fired upon by deputy Jamin Hartland.
 
Aside from a parole violation on the existing warrant, Root could face additional charges including aggravated assault on a police officer.

A Box Elder man who is the suspect of a standoff in Box Elder is at large. Wednesday evening Pennington County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call at 528 Line Road.  

The deputies were serving a warrant to John Root Jr. of Box Elder for a parole violation. Root decided to run. When Box Elder Police Officer Nick Rosser tried to stop him from taking off in his vehicle he was dragged a short distance. Officer Rosser was treated and released at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Root continued his escape, investigators said he drove directly at deputies and was fired upon by deputy Jamin Hartland.

"We don't believe the suspect was hit by the gunfire. The suspect and another individual in the vehicle fled the scene and we are still looking for both of them," said Pennington County Sheriff Kevin Thom.

Multiple agencies responded, including the Special Response Team, the South Dakota Highway Patrol and Rapid City Police officers.

The South Dakota DCI Is continuing the investigation. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of John Root Jr. can contact the Pennington County Sheriff's office at 394-2151, or the Box Elder Police Department at 394-2151.
