Sam Papendick started brewing beer in his garage years ago, but never had the chance to share his recipe with as many people as he will starting in January.
Papendick and co-owner Karl Koth will open the Hay Camp Brewing Company inside the historic Fairmont Creamery building in downtown Rapid City this month.
They say at first, the micro brewery will be exclusive and only open on Saturdays, but hope to be operational two times a week by February.
Papendick says his future goal is not to operate based on in-house sales, but rather by supplying the downtown bars with craft beer, brewed by Koth and himself.
"This is kind of a seed," said Papendick. "This is out pilot and so we're planning on scaling up in the future and then eventually we'll be supplying beer to the downtown businesses."
While the main purpose of the brewery will eventually be to fill kegs rather than pints, Sales and Marketing Manager Sam Coil says he wants as many people to enjoy Hay Camp brew as possible, even though the new company has a very small staff (Papendick, Koth, and Coil).
"We just really want people to come and know that we are making beer for the public," said Coil. "And we want them to taste it, enjoy it, learn about it, but it's going take some time and it's going to be exclusive for a little while."
The first tasting is on Saturday, January 4th. There will be one every Saturday in the month of January.
Coil says there are 55 tickets for the soft tasting's spread throughout downtown businesses including Cranky Jeff's Bicycle. By purchasing a Hay Camp Brewing Co. T-Shirt you can get a ticket to one of the four tasting's. 15 of the T-Shirts include a golden ticket, which gets you into the first tasting on the 4th, and a free flight of beer.
Coil says this idea was inspired by the movie, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
