Deadwood community gets ready for New Year's ball to drop

New Year's Eve is almost here and hotel employees and outside groups are hard at work preparing for Deadwood's New Year's celebration.

Preparations are underway at the Franklin Hotel in Deadwood for their annual New Year's Eve ball drop.

There are a number of promotions and thousands of dollars in giveaways up for grabs during the New Year's events.

The staff have been getting ready for this event for over a month. They brought in a company from Nebraska to put up the New Year's Ball.

John Rystrom, the Franklin Hotel manager says they are expecting a good turn out. "You know we're expecting several thousand people that'll be down on the street, when we drop the ball at midnight, it's always been a great event," said Rystrom.

Michael Ferguson and his affiliates made the ball and have been helping set the ball up to be dropped for 14 years. "I think it brings the whole city together here, we've had so many different people through the years come and help and it's just an event," said Ferguson.

Deadwood's New Year's activities will go through January 2nd.
