Lieutenants in the Rapid City Police Department are getting a five percent raise.
Positions below Lieutenant are under union contract. Lieutenant and above are non union positions. Over the years the Sergeants' salary has increased and gotten close to the Lieutenants'.
Steve Allender, Rapid City Police Chief, said it was becoming a demotivating factor and something had to change.
"We have to stay competitive on wages or we see an inordinate amount of turnover in the department and within the city," said Allender.
A firm is looking at the pay scale for other non union positions in the Police Department, and that will be done next year.
