Rapid City DUI arrests are down from previous years

With New Year's Eve around the corner, people will be out celebrating, and police officers will be out in full force.

This year Rapid City police officers arrested 874 people for driving under the influence. That number is down from previous years. A couple of years ago Rapid City police officers would arrest nearly 1,600 people for DUIs in a year.

Since then they decided to focus their efforts on DUI enforcement. There are two officers whose main focus is on drinking and driving. They also have specialized training including drug recognition.

During holidays, like July 4 and New Year's Eve, more officers are out. Because of the efforts now numbers aren't as high.

"That has gone down and our enforcement efforts haven't been reduced. We're still looking. We're still out there looking for the drinking driver," said Captain Dan Rud, of the Rapid City Police Department.
