How to keep your home insurance rates down

Following all the hail and snow storms in the Black Hills this year, insurance agents are giving some advice on how to save money.

Agents say many people end up paying more for insurance because they are simply not prepared.

They recommend using impact resistant shingles on roofs and heat tape on pipes to avoid future deductibles.

State Farm agent Andy Ainslie says in the Black Hills there are a couple of things people should be prepared for.

"As it has to do with anything with roofs or siding in Western South Dakota, two four-letter words: wind and hail," said Ainslie. "Those two words drive our rates far beyond anything else."

Ainslie also says you can keep car insurance premiums low by avoiding driving when roads are icy, which is a leading cause of accidents.
