Firms chosen for Rapid City arena study

Rapid City officials are one step closer to determining whether it makes more sense to update the Don Barnett Arena or build a new one.

On Monday morning the consultants and construction firms chosen to do the study were announced. A team made up of Arc International and Crawford architects was picked for the consulting. The construction team is Scull Construction and Mortenson Construction.

Some say the current arena, built in 1977, is outdated and no longer meets many different needs.

"We will be negotiating contracts with those two teams and then proceeding with this study phase, this preliminary design study phase," said Rodney Johnson, Operations Management Engineer for Rapid City, and the Civic Center Arena Project Manager.

The study is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2014.
