Pedestrian struck and killed by driver in Box Elder

A vehicle-pedestrian crash on an Interstate 90 service road near Bennett Road in Box Elder resulted in the death of the pedestrian on Friday.

Michael Albright, 52, of Box Elder, was eastbound on the service road in a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado. That stretch of road has no street lights. Albright struck what he believed to be a deer. After stopping and getting out of the vehicle, he realized he had hit a pedestrian. The pedestrian was taken to a Rapid City hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities have been unable to immediately make a positive identification of the pedestrian.

Authorities have determined that alcohol was not involved on the part of the driver. No further information is immediately available.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. Box Elder Police Department, Pennington County Sheriff's Office, Rapid City Police Department and Rapid City Fire Department assisted.
