The Lakota Nation Invitational is in its 37th year this year, thirty five of those years have been held right here in Rapid City.
With discussions of moving the LNI to another city arising, Rapid City, could take quite the economic impact if the event is ever moved.
According to Brian Maliske, general manager of the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, three to five million dollars is how much he estimates is brought into the city. Maliske went on to say that the LNI is one of the largest events held at the civic center and last year they sold more than 45,000 tickets.
Another down side of moving the tournament would be expenses to the schools participating. "If the tournament was in Sioux Falls our schools would have to travel and incur more costs," said Robert Brave Heart Sr., executive vice president of Red Cloud.
Costs range between 15 to 30 thousand dollars for the four day event and a move to Sioux Falls would increase those numbers significantly, depending on where the school is located.
