Many people vie for Gillette City Council seat

Gillette city leaders plan on filling a city council vacancy soon.

After the council recently appointed John Opseth as the new mayor the city started accepting applications to fill Opseth's old job on the city council.

The deadline to apply for the ward two seat is 4:00 p.m. Friday at city hall. The council will interview candidates on December 30 and appoint the new member by January 7.

So far the city has received 11 applications and city officials are pleasantly surprised by the public's interest.

"There seems to be quite a lot of interest. I did not expect this many candidates to apply. I anticipate that we could even have more by the time we're past our time frame," said city administrator Carter Napier.

The term runs through the end of 2014.
