According to the Black Hills Fat Tire Festival Facebook page, the event will be June 20-22, 2014. It will be centered at Founders Park with demonstrations and possibly one race on Hanson-Larsen Memorial Park. The rest of the event is still to be determined.
The Rapid City Parks and Recreation Department received confirmation from the Black Hills Mountain Bike Association that the board voted to transfer the regional mountain biking event to the department. Kristy Lintz, recreation program specialist in charge of special events has been named as the event director.
The Black Hills Fat Tire Festival started in 2007 with a partnership between the BHMBA and the Parks and Recreation Department. Lintz assisted in organizing the event from 2007 to 2011. In 2012 the Parks and Recreation Department stepped away from the event. The following year, the BHMBA moved the event to Rockerville.
Concerns that the event might not happen in 2014 and with the current investment the city is making to the trail system within the city limits, sparked the new deal. The Parks and Recreation Department met with BHMBA board members to see what could be done to bring elements of the event back to Rapid City.
The 2012 event reported 300 out-of-town participants with an economic direct spending value of $157,500. This does not include friends, families or fans. The economic impact of spectators isn't available since numbers were not reported for 2013.
