Foreign Trade through Rapid City Regional Airport on hold

Being known as a place for foreign trade could bring in more manufacturing businesses to the Black Hills, but it may not be realistic right now. That's why Rapid City Mayor Sam Kooiker and other community leaders requested a task force to investigate the feasibility of obtaining a Foreign Trade Zone status in the Black Hills.

The task force, made up of member of the Rapid City Economic Development Partnership, found no feasibility in creating a Foreign Trade Zone. The task force found that it would cost a minimum of $175,000 annually for the position.

However, task force member, Ben Snow told the Rapid City Council Monday night that the city should look into bringing in a customs and border protection agent. "Many local companies with aircrafts at Rapid City Regional Airport would benefit from having local clearance services. Combining this, with our regional tourism industry, we feel like it's a logical next step to continue looking."
