U.S. House passes VA legislation to preserve Hot Springs facility

Posted:

The U.S. House passed the Department of Veterans Affairs Major Medical Facility Lease Authorization Act (H.R. 3521), which will preserve the Hot Springs VA for FY 2014.

"The Hot Springs VA Hospital has long provided critical care to South Dakota veterans," said Rep. Noem.  "Today is a small but well-deserved victory in our ongoing effort to preserve the Hot Springs VA and ensure it is able to continue to deliver the best possible healthcare to South Dakota veterans.  This facility serves a critical role in the Hot Springs community and proudly serves the women and men who have fought and sacrificed for our country."

The passage of H.R. 3521 comes on the second anniversary of the Department of Veterans Affairs announcing that the agency intended to reconfigure the Black Hills Health Care System.  If passed by the Senate and signed by the President, the legislation would authorize 27 of the 28 major lease projects that were requested by the Department of Veterans Affairs.  The only requested project that will not be given permission to move forward in FY 2014 is a lease for a new VA facility in Rapid City, ensuring the Hot Springs VA will remain open until the Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki makes an official decision.

"After two years of discussion, Secretary Shinseki and the Department of Veterans Affairs should have made more progress by this point," added Rep. Noem.  "I urge Secretary Shinseki and the Department of Veterans Affairs to do the right thing and keep the Hot Springs VA Hospital open for our veterans, turning their focus once again towards providing the best quality care for those who have served."

Ensuring quality health care for veterans at the Hot Springs VA has been an ongoing battle for Congresswoman Noem.  In addition to pushing for its preservation through bills like H.R. 3521, Congresswoman Noem has met with Secretary Shinseki, sent letters regarding data discrepancies, and is working to host Secretary Shinseki for a tour of the Hot Springs VA.
