Despite storm and shutdown, tourism numbers are strong

The devastating winter storm and a frustrating government shutdown may have created difficult obstacles on the South Dakota tourism industry, but the Tourism Index shows that the state is still on track to close out 2013 with a bang.
According the Black Hills Badlands and Lakes, revenue is up 3.65 percent overall.

Given the government shutdown and the blizzard, that's impressive.

Here's why:
Mount Rushmore National Memorial had 31,190 fewer visitors compared to October 2012.
Badlands National Park echoed with nearly 15,000 fewer visitors.
Both Jewel Cave and Devils Tower National Monuments reported major losses, down 78 and 79 percent.
