Mother Nature is forcing Sturgis to take a year off from its annual holiday parade, or at least change it from its usual form.
"After much discussion with our participants, sponsors, and community leaders, we decided that there is a point at which the weather becomes dangerous. In the interest of public safety, we canceled the parade, at least in its usual form," said Heidi Kruse, Sturgis Chamber of Commerce and Visitor's Bureau Executive Director.
Instead, parade participants are invited to park their decorated floats in the vacant lot on Lazelle between the Community Center and Lynn's Dakotamart on Friday evening from 5:30-6:30. The community can enjoy a driving tour of those floats along with many residential displays.
The Community Center will host vendors from 3:00 to 9:00 and a chili and soup feed from 5:00-9:00. Santa will be visiting throughout the evening. Many local restaurants also have specials planned.
"No one is more disappointed than us," Kruse stated. "So many here at the Chamber and throughout the community put a great deal of time and effort into making this work each year and many more enjoy it. While it's not what we planned, we hope this is a way to still show off some of that hard work to start the holiday season."
