Police release name of deceased faculty member from SDSM&T

Posted:

Police have identified the man found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound last week on the School of Mines campus.

Alberto Lemut, age 37, was discovered in the Electrical Engineering and Physics late Thursday morning. Classes in that building were canceled while police investigated the scene and made sure there was no threat to students.

Mines President, Heather Wilson released this statement:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Alberto Lemut's family, friends, and colleagues. We will remember him as an exceptional particle physicist who participated in several important research projects throughout his career and as a positive, friendly presence on campus.  Dr. Lemut was the principal investigator for an experiment at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead known as the DIANA Demonstrator and joined the School of Mines faculty this semester from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.  He will be missed by his colleagues, students, and friends.  Memorial arrangements will be announced at a later date."

It's been replaced with a new 24-hour facility on Highway 79 at the entrance to the landfill. Karl Merbach, superintendent of the Solid Waste Operations, said the city decided to take the money it would have used to repair the Fairmont site and build the new facility.
