The Spearfish City Council has declared an emergency concerning the sewer back-ups.
Tuesday night's decision will speed up a project to help as many as 15 homeowners along 8th Street.
Drainage from snow melt from the early October blizzard filled sewer pipes to the max, causing many basements' septic tanks and bathtubs to overflow.
The city will now proceed with installation of a diversion line which will split the sanitary flow in up to three directions. It's designed to provide an extra degree of protection during weather events.
Homeowners in the affected area say the damage could have been prevented if the city had acted faster.
