Stock show conflict brewing over contractual agreements

Posted:

A conflict between the Sutton Rodeo and the Central States Fair is growing over contractual agreements with the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

The Civic Center board met Tuesday with representatives from both the Sutton Rodeo and the Central States Fair to discuss the contract.

Both facilities have events scheduled on the same days and times during next year's Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo.

Ron Jeffries of the Stock Show and Central States Fair says the Sutton Rodeo is in breach of that contract, claiming the contract says they cannot hold similar events on the same day.

Jeffries says "the contract doesn't want you to have simultaneous events that compete for the same attendees, our viewpoint is that it doesn't make sense to try to grow the stock show by producing a second ranch rodeo and we also feel it doesn't grow the show to put the same event on top of each other."

Jim Sutton of Sutton Rodeo declined an interview because of legality issues.
