Mount Rushmore National Memorial coin is unveiled

The America the Beautiful Quarters Program honors Mount Rushmore National Memorial with a new coin.

On Wednesday, about 2,000 people, including elementary students, watched the unveiling of the new quarter. The inspiration of the design comes from photos of men putting the final details to Thomas Jefferson's face. Those in attendance say they like the coin because you get to see another side of the sculpture.

"Many people will see the sculpture, but few people get to look at the carving, that's what's on the upper side of this coin," said Maureen McGee-Ballinger, Public Information Officer at Mount Rushmore.

As part of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program, five new coins representing different national sites, will be released every year until 2020.
