Lead house fire prompts arson investigation, apparent suicide

By Cindy Davis & The Associated Press

Investigators believe the fire that destroyed a Lead home was deliberately set.

The fire at West Addie Street was reported around 6 a.m. Monday and nobody was home at the time.

Lead Volunteer Firefighter Dennis Schumacher says that when he arrived, flames were as high as 25 feet high.  Firefighters were able to keep the blaze from damaging any neighboring buildings.

The home's owner was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gun shot wound.  He was discovered by Butte County Sheriff Fred Lamphere after Lawrence County authorities asked him to check Orman Dam area for a person of interest in a crime.
