Rimrock Community Center in Rapid City destroyed

Posted:

The October blizzard blew through western South Dakota leaving behind mass amounts of destruction, including one community building.

The Rimrock Community Center was destroyed by the blizzard. President Orian Hawkins say 40 inches of snow settled on the roof and caused it to cave in.

Hawkins says he hasn't heard back yet from the insurance company, but he says he believes the building is a total loss. But it's not over for the center. "We intend to go ahead and have another building, because it's owned by the community. No one person owns this building," Hawkins.

A committee has been put together to help move along the cleanup process. "Just trying to get out anything we can salvage. Any appliances, any of the small stuff, any that we might be able to re–use again or donate to somebody to somebody else for use," said Robert Diekmann.

Hawkins says he thinks cleanup alone will cost around $45,000.

It's been replaced with a new 24-hour facility on Highway 79 at the entrance to the landfill. Karl Merbach, superintendent of the Solid Waste Operations, said the city decided to take the money it would have used to repair the Fairmont site and build the new facility.
