Spearfish man sentenced to 7 years behind bars for vehicular homicide


A Spearfish man will spend seven years behind bars for a drunk driving crash that killed his passenger.

Gabriel Orion Culver, age 27, was sentenced by Judge Randall Macy in Fourth Circuit Court Thursday. In addition to prison time, his driving privileges are revoked for ten years after his release and he has to pay restitution.

According to Lawrence County State's Attorney John Fitzgerald, Culver was arrested on April 26, 2013 after crashing his pickup into the side of a bridge on Homestake Road. Culver's front seat passenger, 24-year-old Nickolas Sukstorf died at the scene.

Four hours after the accident, Culver's blood alcohol level was .09 percent. Culver and two other passengers in the back seat were hurt.
