Rapid City police investigate Art Alley death as homicide

Rapid City police are calling the death of a man found in Art Alley Tuesday a homicide.

Investigators say Lamaure Afraidofhawk, age 44, was found behind the Brass Rail bar.  Preliminary autopsy results indicate that Afraidofhawk died from blunt force trauma to the head.

At 9 p.m. on Oct. 22, police were called to the Saint Joseph Street bar because a man was causing a disturbance and refusing to leave. When officers arrived, they found Angelo Richards, 19 of Rapid City, in the restroom.  He was arrested for resisting arrest and minor consuming.

Responding officers also found Afraidofhawk in the alley behind the bar. He was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police would like to speak with anyone who was at the Brass Rail on the evening of Oct. 22. Bar patrons are encouraged to contact the Criminal Investigations Division at 394-4134. Anyone else with information on Afraidofhawk's death is also urged to contact police, or send an anonymous tip by texting ‘RCPD' and the information to 847411.

Rapid City Police and Pennington County Sheriff's deputies are investigating the death of a man found in Art Alley Tuesday night.

At 9 p.m., they were called to the Brass Rail because an underage man wouldn't leave. When officers arrived, they found Angelo Richards, 19 of Rapid City, in the restroom. He was arrested for resisting arrest and minor consuming. Bar staff told KOTA Territory News that Richards was not drinking in the bar but wandered into the bar from the alley instead.

Responding officers also found an unresponsive man in the alley. The 44-year-old was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.  An autopsy is pending to determine the cause of death. His name has not been released.

Art Alley is runs between Sixth and Seventh Streets downtown between Main and Saint Joe.
