Community turns out for service to mourn slain son of football star

Posted:

About 100 people turned out at a Sioux Falls church on Tuesday night to mourn the slain 2-year-old son of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson.

About a dozen family members attended the service for Tyrese Ruffin at First Evangelical Free Church, along with members of the public.

Tyrese died Oct. 11. Authorities say he was assaulted two days earlier by his mother's boyfriend, Joseph Patterson. Patterson is charged with murder and manslaughter but maintains his innocence.

The funeral for Tyrese a week ago was a private family affair, while Tuesday night's event was more public. The Rev. Randy Anderson says a gathering of family and friends at such times is important.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) _ A fellowship gathering is scheduled in Sioux Falls in honor of the 2-year-old son of Vikings running back Adrian Peterson.

Friends and family plan to remember 2-year-old Tyrese Ruffin Tuesday evening at First Evangelical Free Church.

He died this month two days after being hospitalized with severe head injuries.

Investigators say 27-year-old Joseph Robert Patterson assaulted the boy while the two were alone in a Sioux Falls apartment. Patterson is the boyfriend of Tyrese's mother.

A Lincoln County grand jury has indicted Patterson on second-degree murder and manslaughter charges and he's expected to be arraigned later this week.
