Services has an urgent appeal for type O-negative blood donors. During
the past weeks, the demand for blood has outpaced the supply.
Donors may call 1-800-917-4929 or go to www.unitedbloodservices.org to make an appointment to donate at a blood center or mobile blood drive.
Only six percent of the population has O-negative blood and it is the universal blood type, meaning any patient can receive O-negative blood.
"O negative can be given to anyone in an emergency when there is no time to cross-match the donor's blood with the patient's," explained Angelina Pillet, director of donor recruitment for United Blood Services. "When you do the math, our community needs O negative donors to come in almost twice as often as everyone else!"
United Blood Services also encourages those who have never donated blood, to try now. "New blood donors are needed every day to ensure a stable blood supply. If you are O negative, or you don't know your blood type, your community needs you to get involved," said Pillet.
