Throwing down big green bucks for a big gold nugget. It all happened at a once in a lifetime event.
An exact replica of the Potato Creek Johnny Nugget was auctioned off Saturday for $40,000 at the Deadwood Mountain Grand, according to Chris Johnson, auction sponsor.
The event was sponsored by The Clock Shop and Deadwood History as a way to raise money for both the Wounded Warrior Project and Deadwood History.
Johnson, of The Clock Shop, says Saturday's event is so unique because Deadwood History allowed one replica of the nugget to be created before the mold was destroyed. "The Potato Creek Johnny Nugget is the most significant artifact in the black hills in existence in many people's eyes, and it's probably the most valuable also," said Johnson.
Nearly 300 attended the auction.
