Wounded Knee massacre site to be auctioned off

The site of the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre will be auctioned off.  The property owner Jim Czywczynski is accepting sealed bids through October 15th.  Czywczynski is asking $4.9 million dollars for 80 acres or $3.9 million for one 40 acre area and another million for the second 40 acre area.

Czywczynski gave the tribe the first opportunity to buy the land, but nothing has come of it. Oglala Sioux Tribal Council members say Czywczynski is asking too much.  Czywczynski of course disagrees.  He says $4.9 million is the only amount he could come up with to cover his losses from the 1973 American Indian Movement occupation of Wounded Knee.
During that time, Czywczynski's home and museum were destroyed.
