RC Fire Department trains to make tough decisions & to save lives

Risk versus benefit. That's what KOTA Territory firefighters are training to assess.

The Rapid City Fire Department took part in a VES or "Vent, Enter, Search" exercise Monday.

It is designed to be a search and rescue tactic for firefighters when they face a scenario where they know there is a savable life and must determine if they are able to make a rescue without compromising their own safety.

Rapid City firefighter and medic Mark Roderschadt says that run–throughs like this are a practical way for firefighters to sharpen their skills and get some hands on experience, "A lot of our training has become video based and book based but there is no substitute for getting out & actually working with the tools, climbing ladders and using our pumps."

Raderschadt says that quickly obtaining information, such as a known family member or person that may still be inside the structure, is the first step in implementing the VES procedure.
