Black Hills population grows by nearly 1.2 percent since 2012

The population of the Black Hills region grew by nearly 1.2 percent between July 2011 and July 2012, according to new estimates released today by the U.S. Census.

The total population for the seven Black Hills counties in July, 2012 was 194,393.

With a growth rate of nearly 2.0 percent, Meade County was the fastest growing county in the Black Hills. Its population rose to 26,052. 

Pennington County's population increased nearly 1.5 percent to 104,347. Most of Pennington County's growth took place in Rapid City where the population rose from 67,193 to 69,849.

Butte County was the only county in the region that lost population, falling from 10,292 residents to 10,228.
