Horse racing could come back to Sheridan

Off track betting is coming soon to Sheridan.

The Sheridan County Commissioners approved two sites this week.

Wyoming Horse Racing LLC will operate a betting site at the Eagles Club on Main Street and Wyoming Downs will run one at Rails Brews and Cues on Broadway Street.  The latter could open by November.

If the locations are successful, the groups would like to see live racing brought to the county fairgrounds.

"We welcome them to doing their experiment in Sheridan and hope they're successful.   Only time will tell, depends on how they operate it and it depends on the number of people that want to go bet on live or filmed races, said County Commissioner Tom Ringley.

Wyoming Horse Racing LLC's owner, Eugene Joyce, says live racing in Sheridan is possibly as many as four years away because of the needed modifications at the fairgrounds, the current lack of Wyoming horses bred for racing, and the need for capital to fund the startup.
