A great deal of traffic comes through KOTA Territory on I-90.
Some of those vehicles may be carrying hazardous or volatile materials that could create a very dangerous situation.
The Rapid City Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Team and the 82nd Civil Support unit from the National Guard, are sharpening their skills this week in series of exercises and classroom training sessions.
The exercises included hazard identification, response and mitigation.
Rapid City Fire Department HAZMAT technician Alan Johnson says that training opportunities like this are very critical components in preparing for any event that may occur, "A large scale event hasn't happened for some period of time, but that makes the training even more important because it's a high–risk low–frequency event."
Both teams respond to many events locally but the National Guard does also respond statewide.
