PUC approves Black Hills Power electricity rate increase

The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) approved Black Hills Power's request to increase electricity rates by six percent. The PUC received the request in December and met Tuesday at the state capital building in Pierre.

Vice President of Operations at Black Hills Power, Vance Crocker says the increase will allow the company to produce safer and more reliable energy. The company plans on building a new plant to transition from coal to cleaner natural gas to run its generators.

The overall increase will amount to about $5 extra each month for the average Black Hills Power customer. Another rate increase is proposed for 2014.
