It draws as much traffic as the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, but this event is easier on the eyes.
The burst of color in Spearfish Canyon is still in the early stages, with vibrant lime greens beginning to give way to yellows.
Spearfish Canyon Author and Conservationist, Jerry Boyer estimates it at about 35 percent.
He says the fall color progression started gradually about a week or so ago.
Elise Beaverhausen is visiting from Alberta and says the colors are nice now, but she hopes for better when she comes back through in a couple weeks.
"I'm kinda making just a big circle around the western United States, and I heard about Spearfish Canyon and it's colors, so I'm coming back through in a couple weeks and I hope they'll be better then," says Beaverhausen.
You'll find the most spectacular colors closest to Spearfish Canyon Lodge due to the high elevation. It's almost a mile high.
