The Rushmore Plaza Civic Center is showing its age, and the price tag to make the necessary upgrades isn't cheap.
General Manager Brian Maliske estimates the improvements will cost around $9 million. The latest cost comes after the two recent hail storms. A portion of the ice arena roof is totaled, along with other damage to the building and the large Civic Center marquee. In addition, improving the building's front offices and security both in and outside is a priority. "The $9 million in needs far outweigh the money we have in the bank and we have to prioritize," Maliske said.
Here is a breakdown of a few of the potential projects and costs:
-Security access or keyless entry - $82,000
-Hail damage - $90,000 to $350,000 (depending on insurance coverage)
-Security cameras - $108,000
-Elevator and escalator upgrades - $550,000
In regards to the Don Barnett Arena, the Civic Center board plans to go in front of the city council in the coming weeks to seek approval to do a study in order to determine a more precise cost and size of a new arena.
