Portion of ice arena roof totaled due to hail storm

A portion of the roof on the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center ice arena is totaled by hail this summer.

If you don't know what to look for it may be hard to see any damage, but the jagged hail actually cut slits in the roof.  "We've had over 500 identified hits which will turn into leaks at some point in time," Civic Center Operations Manager Paul Sterling said.

The damage is still being added up, but the civic center's insurance deductible is $50,000, and they already know the damage will exceed that figure.  The civic center is financially independent from the city, so tax dollars will not be involved.

The roofs on Stevens and Central high schools got hit hard back in July.  Hail also hit in the Sioux Park area where the running track and baseball fields are located. Most of the damage there is just cosmetic.

In addition, there were multiple city vehicles, including police cars, that were heavily damaged.
