SD ballot measure proposed on insurance restrictions

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) _ A proposed South Dakota ballot measure would prohibit insurance companies from preventing their customers from choosing health care providers that are not included in company networks.
The Argus Leader reports that the proposal is sponsored by three South Dakota doctors. It would allow any health provider to take part in an insurance company's network as long as the provider is willing to meet the insurance company's terms and operates within the company's coverage area.
Supporters of the proposal need to get 15,855 petition signatures from registered voters to get on next year's statewide ballot.
A similar measure was defeated earlier this year by the South Dakota Legislature. Supporters say it gives patients a choice of where they are treated. Opponents say plans that offer that choice are more expensive.
