Those involved with the performing arts center at Rapid City High School, will not be able to name it what they want. On Tuesday, in a 4-3 vote, the school board voted against naming the space the Dakota Center for the Performing Arts.
Those against that name say it reminded them of the Dakota Middle School. People in favor of the name say they are in the process of marketing and rebranding the performance center and thought this would be a perfect fit.
"Through a lot of due diligence we came up with the name the Dakota Center for the Performing Arts and unfortunately it was voted down. So now we go back to the drawing board," said Tony Thomas, Coalition Representative for Rapid City Performing Arts Center Performance Board.
The Performing Arts Center Board will have their next meeting September 4th, where they will discuss new names.
