Douglas School District gets grant to help build new school

Douglas School District officials say if it wasn't for a $4 million grant, they wouldn't be able to build a new elementary school.

Vandenberg Elementary school was built in 1952. Recently the building has had wall separation and ventilation issues.

The new elementary school building will be built on 20 acres of land near the school that used to be base housing. Dr. Loren Scheer, Douglas School District Superintendent, said it will be good to get out of the old building.

"I think just the fact they will get in a brand new building that has all those new amenities will be great for our kids and our staff," he said.

If all goes as planned, the new building will be ready by the fall of 2015. On Monday, the school board will discuss the timeline of the project.
