In a tear-filled courtroom Thursday, a Colorado man received his sentence killing a Rapid City toddler.
As part of a plea deal, Seventh Circuit Judge Robert Mandel sentenced 24-year-old Edward Berges to 34 years behind bars.
Earlier this year, Berges admitted killing his ex-girlfriend's two-year-old daughter, Evelyn. In August of last year, Berges says he became frustrated with the child, and in the heat of the moment, lost his temper and punched the girl in head.
Numerous members of Berges' family spoke on his behalf about his character. They asked the court to show him mercy. Berges also addressed his ex-girlfriend, Nicole Randall, and her family, expressing his remorse and regret.
Berges had faced a possible life sentence in the case.
He will be eligible for parole after 17 years.
