Commission approves shooting range in Deadwood

Posted:

Deadwood City commissioners have approved a shooting range within city limits.

Last Monday, Greg Vecchi, owner of Deadwood Jake's Guns, and Tom Blair, owner of Whistler Gulch Campground, stood before the City of Deadwood Commission with plans to open a shooting range within city limits.

Test firings last week showed that the range will have minimal effects on noise levels in the campground and no effect outside of it.

A shooting range in Deadwood?

It seems to make perfect sense with a town where gunslingers and shootouts used to be a common occurrence.

Last Monday, Greg Vecchi, owner of Deadwood Jake's Guns, and Tom Blair, owner of Whistler Gulch Campground, stood before the City of Deadwood Commission with plans to open a shooting range within city limits.

The commission voted to defer the issue for a week, but did grant a variance so that test firing could take place to see if noise would be a problem.

Vecchi said the test-firing went well and the noise was not a problem.

The location of the shooting range would be in the very back of Whistler Gulch Campground surrounded by three very high hills.

"It's going to be safe and to my way of thinking it's not going to have a negative effect on any of the local landowners," said Chuck Turbiville, Deadwood mayor.

"It's located in the most remote area of Deadwood. It's surrounded by multiple ridge lines that are hundreds of feet high. Also by virtue of topography it muffles the noise extremely well which we proved yesterday," said Vecchi.

The issue will be discussed further Monday in front of the commission once again, where a decision could be reached.
