Local amateur wine judged at Central States Fair

Friday afternoon, 85 wines were put to the test at the Central States Fair, as judges ranked the wines to find the Best in Show.

Around 40 local amateur winemakers had four categories to choose from; dry, semi-sweet, semi-dry, and sweet. Ribbons were rewarded for the best in each category, then a Best in Show was chosen from those winners.

This year, Elaine Dubej won with her sweet raspberry.

Tom Bodensteiner, one of the judges, says there are particular things he is looking for while judging. "It has good balance. You look for a wine that has good malt texture, you look for a wine that has a good flavor," said Bodensteiner. "That it actually tastes like, if it's supposed to be raspberry, that it takes like raspberry, and it's clear."

Bodensteiner says besides grape, they get unusual wines like dandelion, pumpkin, and two-years-ago, jalapeño.
