Children First: banking program for teens

Posted:

Many teens work during the summer, but not all save the money they make. Now there is a new banking program aimed to help teens make good financial decisions.

LexyJo Deneke will soon be off to college. While some students might struggle with how to manage their money, she's prepared.

"I think having my own account has helped me realize how much I've saved over the past summer with my job and babysitting and all that stuff," she said.

She has the security first bank's free green teen banking services to thank for being financially savvy. Security First Bank teller, Dee Davis, says the program is geared toward teens, and it teaches them how to manage their money.

"We're looking to help out parents be able to assist them in educating their children in how to budget their checking account and keep track of their debits, and online banking services," said Davis.

LexyJo monitors her account and so does her dad, Tom Deneke. He says he likes being able to go online and check his kids accounts.

"This helps parents keep track of where their kids are spending their money and plus it gives them responsibility in the meantime," said Tom Deneke.

LexyJo says her dad will ask if he has any questions about what she buys.

"He'd be like 'Where did you just spend $100?' And I'd be like 'Oh nothing, don't worry about it.' But yeah, he keeps track of it and makes sure that we're on track with saving our money," she said.

If it wasn't for the program, LexyJo says she could be tempted.

"I could easily go to the mall and buy everything in one store."

The program just started in June. For more information about the Teen Green Banking Services, you can go to a Security First Bank or visit their website.
