RV numbers on the rise at Sturgis rally

The Sturgis Rally may be all about motorcycles, but increasing numbers of RVs are also making their way to the Buffalo Chip's campground.

Buffalo Chip owner Rod Woodruff says he's seen a 25 to 40 percent increase in RV reservations this year. He says there are currently more than 4,000 reserved RV spaces, and the Buffalo Chip has already built a few hundred more to try to accommodate the increase.

Prices for an RV space at the campground can be as low as $150, but that price quickly goes up as more people book spaces. Woodruff says this increase is likely because more people travel to the rally as families, and many make a drive of more than 1,000 miles.

"People wanna have their RVs, wanna take their RVs, have all the comforts of home while they're on the road, and in the campground they put their motorcycles in the RVs," Woodruff says. "They come here, and then they're free and rested and ready to go out and see Mount Rushmore, Devil's Tower and all the tourist things."

Woodruff says people who do not have reservations are not necessarily out of luck. The Buffalo Chip is quickly creating more temporary spaces to make room for more RVs.
