SD raw milk supporters oppose state rules on sale

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) _ Raw milk producers and their customers have once again asked South Dakota officials to scrap rules they argue would impose too many restrictions on the production and sale of unpasteurized milk.
At a hearing in Pierre, farmers who produce raw milk said the proposed rules would too stringent. They also oppose a proposal to require a warning label on bottles of raw milk.
But a South Dakota Agriculture Department official says the rules provide a reasonable method of testing to make sure raw milk that is sold is safe.
After an initial hearing in June, the department changed the rules so they would apply only to raw milk for sale, not milk that is consumed by a producer's family.
The department will make a decision on the rules later.
