Gamblers ante up in Deadwood

by Jack Siebold, MyTown editor

After months of dismal reports, some good news for Deadwood’s gaming industry … a little profit returns.

According to South Dakota gaming statistics released this week, Deadwood’s total gross revenue was up 5.11 percent last month, compared to June 2012.  It is the first time since December that the industry has shown growth.

Healthy revenue numbers were reported for slot machines, the bread and butter of the Northern Hills casinos.  The slot machine revenue was $8,158,069; up 3.9 percent from the previous June.   While table game revenue was up an impressive 19.53 percent, the actual dollar count of $783,922 is nothing when compared to slot numbers.

Total gross revenue for the first six months of this year is just 0.47 percent shy of last year.

Gamblers helped boost the numbers, anteing up to the tune of $95,580,053 … a 1.38 percent hike over June 2012’s tally of $94,296,308.  Still, for the year, the handle is off 2.91 percent when compared to 2012.

A still recovering economy, coupled with fewer locations with gaming devices, could have a play in the health of the industry.
