Summer heat bring fires to KOTA Territory

People who live in KOTA Territory can tell summer is here by the hot temperatures. But with heat comes fire.

Ray Bubb, SD Wildland Fire Suppression, says that right now the Black Hills area is in a normal fire season, where the fire danger isn't critical, but it's still a threat.

Fire danger in the Black Hills is moderate, while fire danger in the grasslands to the east is high.

Bubb says they have had several grassland fires over this past week, that burned more than 100 acres. And he says even though areas may look green, grass baking in the sun with a little bit of wind can start a fire.

"This warmer weather we expect it to dry out and we're seeing a little break in the weather pattern – it's not raining every day so fire danger is creeping up a little bit," Bubb explained.

Bubb says Wildand Fire Suppression is fully staffed in preparation for the fire season.
