It's been nearly three years since South Dakota's voter– approved smoking ban went into effect across the state. Compliance with the smoking ban may be a surprise.
Authorities say the number of citations written in Sioux Falls over the past three years is only five.
The Rapid City Police Department has not had any real issues with the ban and police have not written any citations. The Sturgis and Mitchell Police Departments also haven't written any citations for violation of the smoking ban.
Lieutenant Don Everson says when the ban first went into place, Mitchell police issued a lot of verbal warnings to people, but he says now he can't even remember the last time they've had a complaint about someone smoking where they shouldn't.
Refusal to comply with the smoking ban is a petty offense with a 25 dollar fine.
