Pennington County landowners form coalition to oppose tax changes

Ag land owners in Pennington County are upset about a county commission decision to raise their property taxes, and those affected are now forming a coalition in hopes they'll change the decision.

They're calling themselves 'The South Dakota Property Tax Payers Coalition for Taxation Fairness'.

They say they're 100 members strong and growing.

Coalition members say the commissioners' decision to increase taxes was made with no public input.

Landowners also have expressed the need for a task force committee to discuss future problems that may arise.
"We are forming to hopefully show the commissioners that this was a bad decision that there was no public input and we hope that they would resend this decision and set up a task force committee to look into something if something needs to be changed,"said Landowner, Brenda Whiting.
"This particular thing was put together without public input and I think this is the real issue here is that raising to 160 acres without public input was probably the wrong way to go in my opinion,"said landowner, Dallas Dietrich.
The county commissioners made it clear that this issue will not disappear and will continue to be open for discussion.
