Rapid City teacher receives one of the nation's most prestigious honors

A Rapid City teacher has received one of the nation's most prestigious honors for a public school teacher.

Katie Anderson, a science teacher at East Middle School, received the California Casualty award for Teaching Excellence. 

Anderson is one of 36 awardees who will be honored at the Academy Awards of public education. More than 850 of the nations leaders from public education, philanthropy, and the private sector will be in attendance.

Five finalist will be selected from the 36 state awardees to receive $10,000 cash awards, and one finalist will be named the nation's top educator to be given another $25,000.

The gala will be taking place in Washington D.C. on February 7, 2014.
